‘OPERATION Dynamo: Rescue from Dunkirk’, the major new visitor experience at English Heritage’s Dover Castle, opened in June.

The attraction recreates the drama of the Dunkirk evacuation in the same historic tunnels in which the ‘Operation Dynamo’ rescue operation was masterminded.
It combines original news-reels and recordings, two years of painstaking research, testimonies from veterans of both the beaches and the tunnels, and state-of-the-art special effects to deliver a vivid account of what Sir Winston Churchill called a “miracle of deliverance”.
Groups visiting ‘Operation Dynamo’ can walk through the secret tunnels deep beneath the castle, see Spitfires screech overhead and feel the resonation of anti-aircraft guns as vivid sets and original film give a sense of the horror of the French beaches under fierce enemy fire.
The experience is free after groups have paid for entry to the castle, which offers special rates for groups of 11 or more.
