Castle celebrates queen’s quincentenary

Sudeley Castle and Winchcombe Village in Gloucestershire are planning a year-long Tudor-themed Katherine Parr Festival for 2012 to mark the quincentenary of Sudeley Castle’s queen, the sixth wife of Henry VIII.

Highlights include the appearance of several of the UK’s foremost historians, authors and gardeners, as well as monthly Tudor Fun Days involving falconry, minstrels and characters in period costume.
At the heart of the celebrations will be a special Katherine Parr exhibition, which will be complemented by a new film, presented by Dr David Starkey, featuring many of the displayed artefacts and illustrating Parr’s life at Sudeley Castle.

A Jubilee pageant

The River Thames will provide the backdrop for the Diamond Jubilee River Pageant on 3rd June 2012, as part of a series of events planned for the Diamond Jubilee bank holiday weekend.

The Queen will lead a flotilla of up to 1,000 boats from across the UK, Commonwealth and around the world, featuring representatives from the armed forces, fire, police and rescue services, as well as passenger boats.
Organisers are planning for well over one million people to join in the celebrations.
The event is expected to be a ‘piece of theatre on water’ and will integrate music, fireworks and special effects.

Blackpool hosts Carnival Ball

As part of Showzam!, a 10-day festival comprising circus, magic and new variety, a Carnival Ball will take place at Blackpool’s Tower Ballroom in February.

A tribute to burlesque, the evening will be compered by Madame Galina and entertainment will be provided by burlesque dancer, Amber Topaz, magician Steve Faulkner and Australian handbalancer Stephen Williams, with live music from Jive Aces, among other acts.
The Carnival Ball will take place at Blackpool’s Tower Ballroom on 11th February 2012. Groups receive one free ticket for every 10 purchased.
