Twopence play adds more venues

Helen Forrester’s Twopence to Cross the Mersey – the Stage Play, initially running for three weeks at Liverpool’s Epstein Theatre in March next year (see GTO 250, August), will now play at three more Merseyside venues in April 2015.

The King’s Speech in 2015 tour

The King’s Speech, the original play that inspired the Oscar-winning film, is set to tour the UK next year, with a cast led by Jason Donovan.

Starting on 5th February 2015 at the Chichester Festival Theatre, the play tells the iconic story of King George VI’s relationship with his Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue, to be played by Donovan.

The play will be co-produced by Chichester Festival Theatre with Birmingham Repertory Theatre and directed by The Rep’s Artistic Director, Roxana Silbert.

Rock of ages to begin nationwide tour

Rock of Ages The Musical embarks on a UK tour this summer.

Following a three-year run in London’s West End, audiences around the country will get the chance to watch Rock of Ages The Musical as it embarks on a UK tour, beginning on 5th May at The Palace Theatre, Manchester.

The rock mix-tape musical, set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, tells the story of a small town girl who meets a big city rocker. Celebrating the classic rock culture of the 80s, the couple fall in love to the greatest songs of the decade.

Ben Richards, best known for playing Bruno Milligan in ITV series Footballers Wives, is set to take on the role of rock god Stacee Jaxx. The actor’s West End credits include Guys and Dolls, Saturday Night Fever and The Full Monty, and he also appeared as a regular judge on the BBC’s amateur dance competition, Strictly Dance Fever.

Alongside Richards, Noel Sullivan will play aspiring rocker Drew Boley.Well-known as a member of pop group Hear’Say, Sullivan is currently playing Tick in the UK and Ireland tour of Priscilla Queen of the Desert and has previously starred as Danny Zuko in Grease and Galileo in We Will Rock You, both in the West End.

The musical’s mix of memorable 80s tunes include We Built This City, The Final Countdown, I Wanna Know What Love Is, Here I Go Again and Don’t Stop Believin’.

Following the musical’s onstage success around the globe, a movie version was released in 2012, starring Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
