St Paul’s Cathedral seen without scaffolding for the first time in 15 years.

St Paul’s Cathedral seen without scaffolding for the first time in 15 years.

The St Paul’s Cathedral programme of cleaning and repair has cost £40 million, taken 15 years to complete, and is the first time in its history that the building has been comprehensively restored inside and out.
Once blackened and damaged, the west front has been painstakingly cleaned, while the interior of the cathedral has been transformed by state-of-the-art conservation techniques.
The light that now floods the space highlights the Portland stone used in the building’s construction and brings mosaics, carvings and sculptures to life.
St Paul’s launched a new group tour system last autumn, which allows the guide or group leader to communicate to individual group members via a microphone and transmitter.
There is no extra charge for this system, but groups who wish to make use of it should book in advance.
