European capital of culture named

MARSEILLE-Provence in the South of France has been selected to be European Capital of Culture in 2013.

As a result, hundreds of cultural and artistic events will take place all year throughout the Provence region, in Aix-en-Provence, Arles, Aubagne, Gardanne, Istres, La Ciotat, Martigues, Salon de Provence and, of course, Marseille.
The multidisciplinary programme will feature over 400 events in the fields of dance, music, visual arts, theatre, exhibitions, street art, conferences, literature, digital art and cuisine.
Highlights will include a month dedicated to circus performers, major exhibitions dedicated to Cézanne and Matisse (in Aix-en-Prevence) and Van Gough and Bonnard (in Marseille), and a series of classical concerts at the village of La Roque d’Anthéron.
The year will also see the opening of 10 new cultural venues along the Marseille seafront, transforming it into one of Europe’s first ‘cultural districts’.
