THE gun, which fired the first shot at sea of World War I, has been craned into place as part of a new £4.5million exhibition that will open next spring at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
The ‘four inch’ gun from the destroyer HMS Lance will be at the entrance to the ‘HMS – Hear My Story’ exhibition. A semi-automatic, quick firing naval gun weighing nearly four tonnes, the weapon had a firing range of over five miles and has been loaned by the Imperial War Museum.
The exhibition will tell undiscovered stories from the ships and ordinary people which have made the navy‘s amazing history over the last 100 years. (Read more about events commemorating WWI in our feature on page 34.)
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard offers packages for groups of 15 or more.
