THE first phase of a 20-year restoration project has been completed at English Heritage’s Wrest Park in Bedfordshire, helped by a £1.14 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
With extended opening hours and offering guided tours for groups for the first time, Wrest Park now boasts a new visitor centre with 74-seater café, shop, plant sales area and interactive exhibitions, with selected rooms inside the 1830s French-style mansion on show, including the refurbished Countess’s Sitting Room. Miles of re-instated historic paths plus motorised golf carts have made access easier to all parts of the grounds.
Restoration work also includes the rose garden, once grassed over and now resembling its appearance in 1917, and the Italian garden containing seasonal bedding.
Group tours of the garden with one of Wrest Park’s knowledgeable volunteers run at 11am or 2pm for an extra charge of £2 per person.
For up to 20 people, tours must be pre-booked.
