The Forum’s seminar at World Travel Market this year attracted a sizeable crowd of travel trade professionals. Richard Bryan of Qa Research gave an overview of the results of the 2011 National Group Travel Report, which highlighted the fact that a third of GTOs undertake at least one overseas trip a year, including the emergence of cruising as a growing group activity. Stephen Moffett of MSC Cruises presented the way in which the cruise operators are responding, including a new online facility for managing group allocations. Robert Barton of Raymond Gubbay explained how the entertainment company has evolved its groups marketing strategy with significant discounts off top prices for events, developing the groups section of its website and looking at communicating through social media. Maurice Duckworth of First Rail Solutions then explained how his company was bringing together rail and coach operations to serve groups, with integrated end-to-end journeys and a ‘meet and greet’ approach. Discussion afterwards raised issues facing group customers in the current climate, and how they can be supported by providing more help with promotion of trips.
