Here be dragons

Captain William H. Livens, creator of the projector

Groups travelling to Picardie in France this year can visit an exhibition dedicated to an almost forgotten weapon from the Battle of the Somme.

‘Breathing Fire – The Livens Large Gallery Flame Projector’, on display at the Museum of the Great War, will highlight recent discoveries made by British historians who found that several huge flamethrowing devices were constructed by the British during the battle, shooting 100-metre jets of burning fuel along the German trenches.
The exhibition includes fragments of the original machines, alongside historical documents and a rebuilt flame projector.
‘Breathing Fire’ runs until 11th December at the Museum of the Great War in Péronne, France.
The museum offers special rates for groups, after which admission to the exhibition is free.
