Knit wits

Established in 2009 by fashion graduate, Victoria George, Knit Connections in Hastings, East Sussex, is a wool shop with a difference.

Victoria began knitting and crocheting as a teenager, taught by her mother, Ruth, who had enjoyed knitting and textiles for many years. She now passes on her skills via classes run from a workshop beneath the shop, situated just off the seafront in the town’s Claremont area.
Groups can choose from knitting, crochet, sewing, pattern-cutting and ‘fashion recycling’ classes (the latter offers you the chance to be creative with old clothing). Sessions can be adapted to any skill level or combination of abilities and last from an hour to two days.
Workshops can also be set up covering other skills, led by specialist tutors. For example, a forthcoming event will see internationally recognised designer Brandon Mably leading a group of 25 in a hand knitting session, teaching how to create patterns with multiple colours (the ‘intarsia’ technique), and local tutor Simon Fuller leads weaving classes. Potential projects include making bags, cushions or clothing, and materials can be included in the overall cost or brought by group members. Tea and coffee or lunches can be provided and, on fine days, some groups may even find themselves knitting on Hastings beach!
