Lottery money boosts attraction

HASTINGS Pier in East Sussex has been awarded £357,400 towards a multi-million pound project to save the fire-damaged structure.

An initial fundraising campaign to save the Victorian pier, which went up in flames last autumn, was reported on the ‘UK News’ section in February.
The award, from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), is a downpayment on a £8.75 million grant dependent on HLF receiving a suitable business plan from The Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust, the organisation spearheading the planned regeneration.
The initial payment will help pay for the restoration of the substructure, deck and railings, which were wrecked by fire in October.
Other elements planned for the restoration include vintage seaside amusements, a visitor education centre and a music venue to replace the pier’s famous ballroom.
