The Hallé, The Lowry and the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester will join forces from 31st March to 14th April 2012 for a brand new production of one of America’s most loved musical theatre masterpieces.
Following her recent triumph at the 2011 MEN Theatre Awards, winning ‘Best Actress in a Visiting Production’ for her role as Maria in The Sound of Music, Connie Fisher will lead the cast as aspiring writer Ruth Sherwood, who arrives in New York with her beautiful younger sister Eileen. The indomitable pair meet an array of colourful characters along the way, creating chaos at every turn in their search for romance, success and a free meal from Walgreen’s deli.
First staged on Broadway in 1953, Bernstein’s score produced some of the most popular songs of the 1950s, including Conquering New York, Ohio and Conversation Piece.
The new production will be directed by Braham Murray OBE, joint artistic director of the Royal Exchange Theatre, with the Hallé, conducted by music director, Sir Mark Elder CBE, providing the orchestra for the show.
Wonderful Town will play at The Lowry in Manchester between 31st March and 14th April 2012. Ten or more people qualify for discounts.
