Main York coach park could close

THE City of York Council plans to close the city’s main coach park.

Almost half a million tourists arrive in York by coach each year.

Almost half a million tourists arrive in York by coach each year.

Should the plans go ahead, the Union Terrace coach and car park, alongside Clarence Street, will be sold to York St John University, which hopes to expand its campus.
The park offers 35 spaces for coaches, and there is only one other coach park in York, at St George’s Field.
Newly-elected council leader, James Alexander, who is backing the plans, has said the council will look at multiple replacement sites in the city centre to spread visitors across York.
Meanwhile, Visit York CEO, Gillian Cruddas, has highlighted the need for good alternative arrangements, stressing that the move should be used as an opportunity to encourage tourism in the city, and that any changes must cater for the needs of coach operators, tourists and the city’s retailers.
She is keen to hear the views of coach operators and GTOs, who can email her directly at gc@visityork.org
Details of the full proposals will go to a meeting of the council’s cabinet later this month.
