The £29 million project will include improvements to the atrium and an overhaul of the galleries to create interactive multimedia displays and to permanently show more of the museum’s collection of World War One artworks, films, sound recordings and photographs.
Further development projects are expected to take place during the next decade, with the overall aim of regenerating the museum site, taking the total bill to £71 million.
Entry to the Imperial War Museum is free of charge.
