The Beatles back on stage

A stage adaptation of Backbeat, the 1994 film about the birth of The Beatles, will preview at the Duke of York’s Theatre from 24th September.

First seen at Glasgow’s Citizen’s Theatre last year, the play was cowritten by Iain Softley (who directed and co-wrote the film) and playwright Stephen Jeffreys, and will be directed by David Leveaux.
Charting the triangular relationship between the band’s original bassist Stuart Sutcliffe, the German photographer Astrid Kirchherr with whom he fell in love, and his best friend John Lennon, the show focuses on Stuart’s struggle with conflicting responsibilities.
Backbeat will play at the Duke of York’s Theatre between 10th October and 24th March 2012. Group rates are available.
