In late October, Contributing Editor Val Baynton was thrilled to attend a two night familiarisation trip in Wiltshire, organised by Flo Wallace from Visit Wiltshire.
Val says, ‘This was a great trip, giving an insight into the rich heritage of architecture and garden design in Wiltshire. Excellent accommodation was provided by the Angel Hotel in Chippenham, and the Cathedral Hotel and Milford Hall Hotel in Salisbury.’
Val’s group comprised GTOs as well as tour operators specialising in trips for incoming groups, mainly from Europe.
During the first afternoon, Val and her group were treated to a guided walk around Bradford-on-Avon and a delicious afternoon tea in the Bridge Tea Rooms, and finished with a fascinating tour of Great Chalfield Manor, about 30 minutes from Chippenham. The next day included visits to the pretty town of Corsham and historic properties Lacock Abbey, Bowood House & Gardens and Longleat. The final day focused on Salisbury with visits to the magnificent Cathedral and attractions a stroll away in the Cathedral Close – Arundells, Mompesson House and Salisbury Museum – followed by a visit to Stonehenge.
Each attraction was keen to welcome groups and Val would like to pass on her thanks to Visit Wiltshire, and for the generous hospitality provided by attractions, hotels and the Market Inn and Sarum College in Salisbury who also hosted meals.
