The chance to attend the prestigious National Television Awards being broadcast live from the O2 Arena, Greenwich, was enjoyed by Editorial Director Peter Stonham courtesy of event partners MBNA Thames Clippers who used the occasion to showcase their new VIP launch Orion Clipper, which can be used to whisk celebrities from central London, London City Airport or other points, to the O2 venue where they are attending or performing. Peter took advantage of one of the regular MBNA Thames Clipper river boat services to travel from the pier at the South Bank down to London Bridge to join the Orion Clipper, which then dropped his party at the O2. Here, they joined the large crowd of TV addicts who were there to see the nation’s choices of the best programmes and personalities in 17 categories receive their awards.
In the audience were also the many celebrity winners including the casts of Downton Abbey, Coronation Street, East Enders, The Great British Bake Off plus Billy Connolly, Graham Norton and Ant & Dec, amongst others.
Peter comments that it was his first experience of an event at the O2, which was very slickly run in the large, high-tech auditorium. It was great to have the chance to ride the VIP launch but he fears that the normal hire rate of £800 an hour for 12 passengers may be beyond the average GTO’s budget. Using the regular MBNA Thames Clipper services that run up and down the river between Royal Arsenal Woolwich (East) to Putney (West) is, however, clearly now an attractive option for group travel.
