A group of 30 Wyre Forest U3A members left Kidderminster in October for a four-day visit to the World War One battlefields in France and Belgium.

The trip was organised by History Group leader, Margaret Nicholls. She recalls, “Our base for the stay was the Novotel Ypres Centrum in Belgium, situated close to the Menin Gate. This was an excellent hotel with spacious and spotlessly clean rooms.”
On the second day of the break, the group were joined by Noel, a very knowledgeable local guide, who spent two days with the party, touring the many battlefields and cemeteries in the Ypres area as well as the Somme in France. “By special request, we went to visit the Worcestershire Regiment Memorial at Gheluvelt,” says Margaret. “We also spent time at Thiepval where we were shown a short film about the battles and given the opportunity to purchase souvenirs of our visit. The visitor centre here is exceptional with very friendly staff.”
The following morning was free to spend looking round Ypres before boarding the coach for the journey home. “The visit was organised through LJ Leisure of Rotherham using a coach supplied by Hammonds of Nottingham,” says Margaret. “We had never used LJ Leisure before but their organisation was outstanding. The tour manager and coach driver were superb and could not do enough for us. Everyone agreed that it had been a moving and worthwhile experience and excellent value for money; we were so impressed, we have booked two more trips with LJ Leisure this year!”
