Plans to build Europe’s tallest observation wheel in Newcastle

The World Wheel Company has revealed plans for a £100m regeneration project, which will include Europe’s tallest observation wheel towering over Newcastle upon Tyne’s Quayside.

The giant wheel, nicknamed ‘The Whey Aye’ in celebration of its location, is to stand nearly 140-metres high – five metres taller than the London Eye.

It will be part of the ‘Giants on the Quayside’ development regenerating the site of the former Spillers’ Flour Mill.

It will include a Geordie Giant (a 12-metre tall steel sculpture), cafés and restaurants. Additional attractions such as family entertainment centre with trampolines and climbing wall, and other sporting facilities are also planned.

A 700 square metre LED digital screen, on the facade of a visitor centre at the base of the wheel, will give updates about local cultural activity and events taking place throughout the city, while during phase two of the development a record-breaking 10,000 square meter LED digital screen is proposed to be added to the wheel.

If approved by the local planners, work could begin in summer 2019.
