Wander through Waddesdon

GTO magazine’s Readers’ Day to Waddesdon and Blenheim will be rescheduled to later this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the meantime, GTOs can explore both the rooms and gardens of Waddesdon Manor via virtual tours and videos on their website.

Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire was built at the end of the 19th century by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild. The creation of the garden was an enormous undertaking, beginning with the levelling of a hilltop in 1874. Ferdinand started with a blank canvas; “there was not a bush to be seen or a bird to be heard”, yet seeing beyond these unpromising beginnings, he was able to create a weekend paradise. Through tours online, it is now possible to explore these gardens virtually and you can enjoy special tours focusing on garden sculptures or the estate’s most magnificent trees.

Alternatively, you can take in the full splendour of Waddesdon’s Victorian gardens through a range of films available on YouTube. Find out about the elaborate Rococo Aviary, or step inside the private kitchen garden at Eythrope.

Fascinating 3D tours of particular rooms and wings of the house can also be found online.
